This two-part journal outlines the approach during the planning process captured by Manlift\u2019s leading safety experts &#8211; Wim van Meer and Robert Cavaleri.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n<p>At all work sites potential risks and hazards need to be identified and addressed before anyone use a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manliftgroup.com\/en\/blog\/training\/what-is-mewp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP)<\/a><\/strong>, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manliftgroup.com\/en\/rental\/aerial-work-platforms\/articulated-boom-lifts\/\">boom lifts<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manliftgroup.com\/en-in\/rental\/aerial-work-platforms\/scissor-lifts\/\">scissor lifts<\/a>. A thorough risk assessment should cover the following key areas:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Site survey and risk assessment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Selecting the correct MEWP<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pre-use inspections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personal protective equipment (PPE) selection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Last-minute checks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-site-survey-and-risk-assessment\">Site Survey and Risk Assessment<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n<p>The site survey and risk assessment must be carried out by someone who has acquired the appropriate training and experience and is also known as a Competent Person in legal terms. Manlift can advise you on which risks to bear, but it is essential that your Competent Person performs the risk assessment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n<p>You have a legal and moral obligation to carry out a comprehensive site risk assessment. This results in identifying and addressing potential risks to employees, colleagues, and other contractors working in the same area. It also implies to identify potential hazards and the level of risk for each hazard. A risk assessment must be specifically tailored to each site and application &#8211; you cannot adopt a \u201cone size fits all\u201d approach.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n<p><strong>Key steps in a Risk Assessment are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify hazards &#8211; anything that could cause harm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decide who might be harmed, and how that could happen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assess the risks and take the right precautions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make a record of your findings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regularly review the risk assessment and update it as required<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n<p><strong>Potential risks to consider include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shallow pits and holes &#8211; including those hidden by water, ice, mud, and debris<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ledges, slopes, and rough terrain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Potholes, drains, manholes, trenches, and other excavations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ground-level obstructions such as boulders, bollards, and debris<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overhead obstructions, crushing\/trapping hazards, and electrical conductors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hazardous locations and atmospheres<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ground or floor load-bearing capabilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wind and weather conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Presence of unauthorized persons<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Potential collisions with other machinery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n<p>One of the biggest challenges for MEWPs is while the machine is elevated. Here it is important during the risk assessment to ensure that you have an emergency rescue plan which includes having people on the ground, working nearby, who are trained in using the ground controls and the emergency lowering system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n<p>Moreover, to help prevent operators being crushed by an overhead obstacle many boom lifts and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.manliftgroup.com\/en\/rental\/aerial-work-platforms\/scissor-lifts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scissor lifts<\/a>\u00a0are now fitted with secondary guarding devices. There are differences in how these devices work which makes it even more important to gain an understanding of anti-entrapment which forms a critical part of your risk assessment when it comes to identifying any hazards from overhead objects.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n<p>In particular on construction sites, the environment is constantly changing. So be prepared to update your risk assessment as the situation develops \u2013 for example, as additional contractors or construction equipment begins working in the same area as your MEWP.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-selection-of-the-correct-mewp-for-safe-working-at-height\">Selection of the correct MEWP for Safe Working at Height<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n<p>Both, the site survey and risk assessment will enable to selection of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.manliftgroup.com\/en\/blog\/aerial-work-platforms\/which-aerial-work-platform-should-you-choose\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most appropriate MEWP<\/a>\u00a0for safe and efficient working at height.
